He has written Infinity Blues, a book of poems, and Hello Sunshine, a collection of poems and short stories.
Son Volt/Notes Of Blue
Limited vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release from the alt. Country/Americana outfit. Led by the songwriting and vocals of Jay Farrar, Son Volt was one of the most instrumental and influential bands in launching the alt. Country movement of the 1990’s. A movement that was the precursor to what is now widely referred to as Americana. The 10 songs on Notes Of Blue are inspired by the spirit of the blues, but not the standard blues as most know it. The unique and haunting tunings of Mississippi Fred McDowell, Skip James and Nick Drake were all points of exploration for Farrar for this collection. The album opens with the country soul of “Promise The World”, followed by “Back Against The Wall”, a song that could stand alongside the great Son Volt songs of their early albums. Farrar possesses one of the most distinctive voices in roots, rock, country or any genre. He exudes a soulful longing combined with a wise-beyond-his-years command that is as arresting and compelling as ever. As a songwriter, Farrar’s depth and poetic penchant has been the foundation of a thoughtful, deep and intelligent body of work. Both attributes are on full display on Notes Of Blue, as he touches on themes of redemption and the common struggle, both of which are at the core of the blues. Whether you call it alt. Country, Americana, roots rock, insurgent country or just good ol’ rock ‘n’ roll, musical trends appear and disappear on regular basis. Notes Of Blue is a testament to the legacy of inspiration and creative spirit that Jay Farrar and Son Volt continue to uphold.
Robert Randolph & The Family Band/Got Soul
Limited 180 gram vinyl LP pressing in gatefold jacket. 2017 release. Pedal-steel virtuoso Robert Randolph returns with Got Soul. The album reaffirms that Randolph and his Family Band have truly evolved into one of the most exciting and innovative outfits in contemporary music. Got Soul takes stock of Randolph’s past as a church musician as it pushes the band forward into new places. There is no shortage of originality on the album with songs that run the gamut from gospel numbers to deep, funky grooves to incendiary rock-and-soul jams. The hauntingly exquisite “Heaven’s Calling” features Randolph on solo steel while guest vocalists Darius Rucker and Anthony Hamilton lend their golden voices to “Love Do What It Do” and “She Got Soul” respectively. “I Thank You,” the 60s Sam & Dave R&B smash, is completely re-imagined in the hands of the Family Band and Snarky Puppy’s very on Cory Henry.
Strand Of Oaks/Hard Love
Limited vinyl pressing. Tim Showalter’s latest release as Strand of Oaks, Hard Love, emanates an unabashed, raw, and manic energy that embodies both the songs and the songwriter behind them. “For me, there are always two forces at work: the side that’s constantly on the hunt for the perfect song, and the side that’s naked in the desert screaming at the moon. It’s about finding a place where neither side is compromised, only elevated.” Drawing from his love of Creation Records, Trojan dub compilations, and Jane’s Addiction, and informe by a particularly wild time at Australia’s Boogie Festival, he sought to create a record that would merge all of these influences while evoking something new and visceral. These influences coupled with an uninhibited and collaborative studio experience moved an initial concept for a singularly feel-good record to something more complex and real. As much as Showalter wants this record to seem like a party, it’s more than that. It feels like living. “You went away… you went searching… came back tired of looking” is how Showalter begins the title track, a sentiment that epitomizes Showalter’s own mentality in beginning Hard Love. As the record progresses, so do the themes of dissatisfaction and frustration with love, family, success, and aging, both in personal experience and songwriting.
Jens Lekman/Life Will See You Now
Jens Lekman describes his new record, Life Will See You Now, playfully, but also honestly, as “a midlife-crisis disco album; it’s an existentialist record, about seeing the consequences of your choices”. It’s a typical Lekman album in several ways: sly humour is key to it’s heartfelt nature; it inverts pop’s writing norm by making songs with sad concerns sound happy and songs with a happy subject sound sad; and it plays with notions of identity and the self. But, as the title suggests, it also represents a significant move forward, as if across a threshold. It’s the more expansive, upbeat sound of a revitalised Lekman, who is just one of many characters in his new stories about the magic and messiness of different kinds of relationships.
Neville Staple/Return Of Judge Roughneck
Double vinyl LP pressing. 2017 studio album from ska’s reigning Rude Boy, Judge Roughneck himself, Neville Staple! Originally the toaster for UK superstars The Specials and then one-third of Fun Boy 3, Staple continues his critically acclaimed solo career with this album of new material plus several bonus dub mixes. Features guest appearances by former Geraldine Fibbers and The Jayhawks violinist Jessy Greene as well as producer Ed Rome. After his tenures with The Specials and FB3, Staple joined Ranking Roger from The Beat to form Special Beat in 1990, a revival group playing hits from both former two-tone bands. This was in response to the huge explosion of interest in ska in the United States, the so-called third wave of ska. Since then, he rejoined The Specials for a few reunion tours before returning to his solo career.
Nikki Lane/Highway Queen
Vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. Nikki Lane’s remarkably dazzling third album Highway Queen, sees the young Nashville rebel emerge as one of country and rock’s most gifted songwriters. Produced by Lane and fellow singer songwriter Jonathan Tyler, and recorded in Denton, TX and Nashville, TN, Highway Queen is an emotional tour-de-force. Blending potent lyrics, unbridled blues guitars and vintage Sixties country-pop swagger, Lane’s new music will resonate as easily with Black Keys and Lana Del Rey fans as those of Neil Young and Tom Petty. Highway Queen starts with the whiskey-soaked restlessness of “700,000 Rednecks,” a rowdy call to action, and ends on the profoundly raw “Forever Lasts Forever,” where Lane belts freely, mourning a failed marriage – the “lighter shade of skin” left behind from her wedding ring. Lane’s journey to heartbreak takes exquisite turns. “Companion” is pure Everly Brothers’ dreaminess (“I would spend a lifetime/ Playing catch you if I can”). Elsewhere, she goes on a Vegas bender on the rollicking “Jackpot,” fights last-call blues (“Foolish Heart”) and tosses off brazen one-liners at a backroom piano (“Big Mouth”).
Deluxe import edition features 19 tracks. 2017 release, the debut album from British singer/songwriter Rory Graham AKA Rag’n’Bone Man. The album’s first single “Human” peaked at #1 in the Official Singles Charts in Austria, Germany, Belgium and Switzerland and has been certified Gold in Germany, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands. The album includes tracks produced by Two Inch Punch, Jonny Coffer and Mark Crew. In 2016 Rag ‘N’ Bone Man won the Brits Critics’ Choice Awards 2017.
The Orwells/Terrible Human Beings
Limited vinyl LP pressing including digital download. 2017 release. Terrible Human Beings is the third album from Chicago-based outfit the Orwells and follows their 2014 release, Disgraceland. Opting for a more grown-up approach, both lyrically and musically, than that of previous releases, the album sees the Orwells lose none of their raucous charm. The Orwells features members Mario Cuomo (vocals), Dominic Corso (guitar), Matt O’Keefe (guitar), Grant Brinner (bass), and Henry Brinner (drums). Their debut album Remember When was released on August 7, 2012, through Autumn Tone Records. Their first EP, Other Voices, was released on June 24, 2013, on National Anthem Records. The band’s second EP, Who Needs You, was released on September 10, 2013, also through National Anthem.
Vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release, the first album in five years from LA-based duo Asa Taccone and Matthew Compton AKA Electric Guest. Plural breaks the group’s silence with their most confident, catchy, fully-realized music to date, featuring behind the scenes contributions from Joanna Newsom, Haim, and Justin Young from The Vaccines. Recorded in LA, Plural infuses Electric Guest’s off-kilter blend of electronic, pop and R&B with an even more adventurous spirit than on 2012’s Mondo. Written during a period of self-reflection, Plural embraces Taccone and Compton’s original instincts, forgoing detailed arrangements and falsettos in favor of a back-to-basics approach – strong, natural vocals, intuitive musical instinct, and unbridled inspiration. The result is a sonic mélange that sounds as if it’s from both the past and future, layering everything from 80s synths to iPhone drum machines to Latin and Caribbean percussion.
The Steeldrivers/The Steeldrivers
Limited vinyl LP pressing. The SteelDrivers’ critically and commercially successful 2008 self-titled debut established the Nashville band as a force to be reckoned with. With Music Row songwriter Chris Stapleton at the helm – who has gone on to be a star in his own right- The SteelDrivers was praised for it’s contemporary mix of blues, Americana and country, garnering a Grammy nomination, and the attention of singer Adele, who covered “If It Hadn’t Been For Love” on her 2010 LP, 21. Although this album was a great success, Stapleton announced in April 2010, that he was leaving the band to focus on raising his family. Then his solo career took of spectacularly a few short years later.
Double vinyl LP pressing including bonus track. 2017 release from the EDM superstar. Deadmau5, real name Joel Zimmerman, never quite goes away completely in between album cycles with various statements and music snippets that emerge from his long studio sessions. Now the “Strobe” producer is ready to release a full project, a ‘new’ album. The album is titled W:/2016ALBUM (pronounced “W Drive 2016/2017 Album), referring to the location on his network access server. The first single “4ware.” Deadmau5 is a record producer and DJ from Toronto, Canada. Sallie Ford/Soul Sick
Vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release from the Portland-based singer/songwriter. Soul Sick is the long-awaited follow-up to 2014’s Slap Back. Doo-wop harmonies, slippery British invasion keyboards, and crunchy, fuzzed-out guitars back Ford’s distinctive howl and surround her at-once intimate and confrontational musings on love, depression, and fear throughout Soul Sick’s 11 scorching tracks. Recorded in her hometown of Portland, OR with producer Mike Coykendall (M. Ward, She & Him, Bright Eyes) and engineer and mixer Adam Selzer (the Decemberists, Langhorne Slim, Blind Pilot). When Sallie Ford first burst into the music scene she quickly established herself as one of the most powerful voices in indie rock.
Steve Winwood/Arc Of A Diver
Limited 180 gram vinyl LP pressing. Arc Of A Diver is the second solo album by Steve Winwood. All instruments featured on the record were played entirely by Winwood himself. Featuring his first solo hit “While You See a Chance”, (which peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States), this was Winwood’s true breakthrough album as a solo artist. It peaked at #3 on the Billboard 200 album chart, establishing him as a commercially viable act. The cover artwork for the album was by Tony Wright. Before beginning his successful solo career, Winwood was a key member of The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, Blind Faith and Go. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic in 2004.
Jethro Tull/ Stand Up (Steve Wilson Remix)
Limited 180gm vinyl LP pressing. Digitally remixed – by Steven Wilson – and remastered edition of this album from the classic British band led by Ian Anderson. Jethro Tull’s second album, Stand Up, marked an early turning point for the band with the addition of guitarist Martin Barre along with Ian Anderson s introduction of folk-rock influences to the group’s blues-based sound. Released in the summer of 1969, Stand Up rose quickly to the top of the U.K. Albums Chart, and eventually earned gold certification in the U.S. Before recordings for the album began, the band’s original guitarist Mick Abrahams resigned because of musical differences with Ian Anderson; Abrahams wanted to stay with the blues rock sound of their 1968 debut, This Was, while Anderson wished to add other musical influences such as folk rock. Mick was replaced by guitarist Martin Barre, who appeared on every Jethro Tull album from this point on. Stand Up represents the first album project on which Anderson was in full control of the music and lyrics.
