Belle & Sebastian/How To Solve Our Human Problems Part One EP
Vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release from the Scottish outfit. A new Belle and Sebastian release is always something to cheer. So three new releases leads to the inevitable conclusion: three cheers! Here is the latest installment in a career that has always pursued a singular and delightful vision of what pop represents and what it can achieve, a career that has seen them triumph against the odds to win a Brit award, be one of the first bands to curate their own festival, and play at the official London residence of the US ambassador (the last president’s ambassador, not the current one’s). Murdoch, as ever, is not the only writer. Sarah Martin (violin/ vocals) brought in the delicious ‘The Same Star’, which marries Belle and Sebastian’s melodiousness to a pounding Motown backbeat, and was produced by Leo Abrahams (Ghostpoet, Wild Beasts, Regina Spektor). There’s one big reason why 15 songs are coming out on three EPs, rather than one album. “We’d made a couple of LPs, Tigermilk and If You’re Feeling Sinister, within the space of six months,” Murdoch says, remembering the early days of the band’s career, and how that fed into their decision-making this time.
Robert Finley/Goin’ Platinum
When you’ve been making music for as long as Robert Finley has, you know that the key to success is in your instincts. You learn to trust your gut, you learn to trust your ear, and most of all, you learn to trust your company. Fortunately for us, here in 2017 Mr. Finley has all three in spades.
The singer lives in the tiny, forgotten town of Bernice, Louisiana, right near the Arkansas line, but in his younger days his music took him all over the world. Joining the Army as a teenager, Finley was sent to Europe as a helicopter technician but found more appealing work as the leader of the Army band, and toured the continent many times over on guitar and vocals. Following his rambling military service, he learned the trade of carpentry and settled back home in the States. He leaned on his gospel and blues songs for a hobby rather than career, and mostly confined his artistry to the streets of the South. But now, in the true spirit of the American Dream, Finley’s music is once again primed to reach doors and shores at home and abroad, with his new LP Goin’ Platinum!.

Whether it’s collaborating with his band mates, recording guest vocals, or hand-picking opening acts, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James has always radiated a spirit of camaraderie with his fellow musician.
Four Tet/New Energy
Four Tet expands on the new age meditations of his recent singles with a freshly focused New Energy. Fully formed within the endlessly possible creative confines of Ableton Live, New Energy follows on from 2015’s Morning / Evening and features contributions from Tom Baker & Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. – Mixing his usual classic trip-hop leanings with a digitized melodic and at times melancholic edge, New Energy neatly pulls together the lighter ends of Beautiful Rewind’s house moves and Morning / Evening’s lush atmospherics. This is most perfectly pieced together on the twisted wheel UKG of Scientists, an offering of solace to those waiting for a new collab 12″ with Burial to form. Before the sparkly-treated guitar notes that are a recurring theme throughout bubble up to the forefront on the Coil Dark River-esq Thousand & Seventeen, imagine a rainbow of paint running all over the Coil classics oil black surface. – The ambient episodes ring strong also, from the angelic upstart of Tremper to the haunted dialogue of Gentle Soul, a glassy surface capturing the influence of F.U.S.E’s Nightdrive cruise is mirrored, showing Hawtin’s AI belter a strong new mode of studio extraction. This is topped off nicely with SW9 9SL and LA Trance, each a blend of mnml techno tones.

Various Artists/Sincerely L. Cohen: A Live Celebration of Leonard Cohen
‘Legendary singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen died on November 7, 2016, one day before the 2016 Presidential Election, but the world didn’t find out for several days after. On January 24, 2017 (shortly after the inauguration of Donald Trump and the succeeding Women’s March on Washington), New York City finally paid tribute to the Poet Prince of Montréal with a concert featuring dozens of singers, songwriters and musicians, including Richard Thompson, Josh Ritter, Will Sheff (Okkervil River), Amy Helm, Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group), Elvis Perkins, Holly Miranda, Joan As Police Woman, Delicate Steve, and many more. It was an evening the Village Voice called ‘a loving, thoughtful tribute to Cohen’s life in music and poetry.’ The subsequent live album resulting from those performances, entitled, ‘Sincerely, L. Cohen: A Live Celebration Of Leonard Cohen, features highlights from this nearly three-hour marathon concert, which the Voice also hailed as a ‘carefully constructed, expertly structured production.’ – The concert and subsequent album was produced by Cohen fans Jesse Lauter (Tedeschi Trucks Band), Hannah Gold (City Winery Presents), and Josh Kaufman. Kaufman (Guitar- Bob Weir) led the house band, which featured first-rate New York-based musicians including Ray Rizzo (Drums-Yo Yo Ma), Walt Martin (Keys-The Walkmen), Annie Nero (Bass-Craig Finn), Stuart Bogie (Brass & Woodwinds-Arcade Fire, Superhuman Happiness), Nick Kinsey (Percussion-Kevin Morby), and Dave Harrington (Guitar-Darkside), punctuated by a backing vocal trio that Cohen would have been proud of: Leslie Mendelson, Jocie Adams and Cassandra Jenkins.

Johann Johannsson/IBM 1401 A Users Manual
Vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. Never before pressed on vinyl, IBM 1401, A User’s Manual, is one of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s most beloved works. Released in 2006, the decade since it’s release has seen Jóhann establish himself as one of the most important composers in the world, notably scoring movies such as Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Sicario and The Theory of Everything. Johann’s scores have been nominated for two Academy Awards, two Golden Globes, a Grammy and three BAFTA awards. He was awarded the Golden Globe for Best Original Score for The Theory Of Everything. Inspired by the work his father did in the ’60s when chief maintenance engineer of one of Iceland’s first computers, Jóhann originally wrote IBM 1401, A User’s Manual to accompany a dance piece by long-standing collaborator and friend, Erna Ómarsdóttir. For the album release, he rewrote the piece for a 60-piece string orchestra, with a new final movement (built around a poem by Dorothy Parker) and incorporating both electronics and reel-to-reel recordings made by his father and friends in 1971 of the IBM 1401 mainframe computer singing the hymn “Ísland Ögrum Skorið” by Sigvaldi Kaldalóns as it was being decommissioned.
