Ty Segall/Ty Segall
Vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release from the prolific singer/songwriter. Ty Segall has made whole records that wrestle with realities fighting against some, pulling mightily to bring others into being. Of late, he s thrown up his hands and donned clown shoes, dancing merrily in the dual role of oppressed/oppressor! His hands aren’t any more or less dirty than anyone else’s but amidst the thunder and the chaos of the ongoing storm, he’s looking for the eye within. This self-titled record is a clean flow, a wash of transparency falling into a world that needs to see a few things through clearly, to their logical end. It’s got some of the most lobe-blasting neckwork since the Ty Segall Band’s Slaughterhouse (from way back in the long, hot summer of 2012), but it also features a steep flight of fluent acoustic settings, as Ty s new songs range around in their search for freedom without exorcism, flying the dark colors high up the pole in an act of simple self-reclamation. All he wants is some truth! The construction and destruction of his chosen realities has, until now, been a luxury Ty has rightfully reserved for himself, striping overdubs together to form the sound but for this new album, he entered a studio backed by a full band Emmett Kelly, Mikal Cronin, Charles Moothart and Ben Boye to get a read on this so-called clarity. This leads to a new departure in group sound, as well as some of the most visceral and penetrating vocal passages yet heard from Ty Segall.

Keys said that she was not planning a hiatus, but after she finished recording material for the album, she found out she was pregnant which “put a different time spin on things.” Her son Genesis was born in December 2014. Keys has sold over 18.4 million albums in the US, and over 30 million albums worldwide.

Champion Jack Dupree/Blues From The Gutter
The 1958 masterwork album of Champion Jack Dupree‘s long and prolific career. Cut in New York (in stereo!) with a blasting band that included saxist Pete Brown and guitarist Larry Dale, the Jerry Wexler-produced Atlantic collection provides eloquent testimony to Dupree‘s eternal place in the New Orleans blues and barrelhouse firmament. There’s some decidedly down-in-the-alley subject matter — “Can’t Kick the Habit,” “T.B. Blues,” a revival of “Junker’s Blues” — along with the stomping “Nasty Boogie” and treatments of the ancient themes “Stack-O-Lee” and “Frankie & Johnny.”
Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau
Double vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release. Nonesuch Records label mates mandolinist/singer Chris Thile and pianist Brad Mehldau, longtime admirers of each other’s work, first toured as a duo in 2013. At the end of 2015, they played a two-night stand at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom before going into the studio to record Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau, a mix of covers and original songs. The two musicians first performed together in September 2011 as part of Mehldau’s residency at London’s Wigmore Hall. The Guardian said of that performance, “Mehldau struck up his signature rocking chord vamp over which lightly struck motifs swell to sensuous extended melodies. Thile kept cajoling him with percussive snaps, flying runs, and chords strummed fast enough to sound as seamless as a purring strings section, inducing Mehldau… to bat back the playful provocation with stinging rejoinders.”
Delbert McClinton & Self-Made Men/Prick Of The Litter
Delbert McClinton & Self-Made Men/Prick Of The LitterVinyl LP pressing. Multi-Grammy Award winning artist Delbert McClinton is at the top of his game with his 19th studio album, Prick Of The Litter. Prick Of The Litter was recorded with the support of McClinton’s working band, Self- Made Men who include Bob Britt (guitar), Kevin McKendree (keyboards), Mike Joyce (bass), Jack Bruno (drums) and Quentin Ware (trumpet). The chemistry of this group of musicians, the best band he’s ever had according to McClinton is on full display on this album.
Tift Merritt/Stitch Of The World
Tift Merritt/Stitch Of The WorldVinyl LP pressing. Stitch Of The World, Tift Merritt’s sixth studio album, was written on a friend’s farm in Marfa, Texas, at Merritt’s California cabin, and in New York City in the wake of several major changes in her life. The album was recorded in Los Angeles while Merritt was six months pregnant, after which she relocated to her hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. The time since the release of Traveling Alone has also found Merritt recording and touring with Andrew Bird in his Hands of Glory, MC Taylor’s Hiss Golden Messenger, and classical pianist Simone Dinnerstein. Merritt work-shopped the songs on Stitch Of The World with longtime friend Sam Beam of Iron & Wine after bumping into him in an airport.
Cloud Nothings/Life Without Sound
Cloud Nothings/Life Without Sound Vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. Dylan Baldi maintains simple, admirable standards in quality. “A thing I like to do with all of my records is drive around with them,” the 25-year-old Cloud Nothings frontman says. “In high school, I would listen to music for hours like that: just driving through the suburbs of Cleveland. And if it sounds good to me in that context and I can think of high school me listening to it and saying, ‘That’s okay,’ I feel good about the record. This is the one that’s felt best.” “This” is Life Without Sound, the radiant, far-far-better-thanokay fourth full-length his rock outfit has recorded since he began writing and releasing songs on his own under the Cloud Nothings alias in 2008. While it’s highly acclaimed predecessor-2014’s Here and Nowhere Else-came together spontaneously, in the little time that touring allowed, Life Without Sound took shape under far less frenetic circumstances.
Julie Byrne/Not Even Happiness
Julie Byrne/Not Even Happiness Vinyl LP pressing. 2017 release from the singer/songwriter. Sometimes it can take years to find your calling. Not so for Julie Byrne, whose power of lyrical expression and musical nous seems inborn. Her second album, Not Even Happiness, has evolved at it’s own pace. It spans recollections of bustling roadside diners, the stars over the high desert, the aching weariness of change, the wildflowers of the California coast, and the irresolvable mysteries of love. Teaching herself guitar, having picked it up when her father became ill and could no longer play, Byrne also admits she can’t read music and doesn’t even listen to it all that much – her own vinyl was the first in her possession. “Without possessing the right words, I’d describe to [producer] Eric Littman (Phantom Posse) and Jake Falby (who contributed strings) the feeling I wanted a song to evoke, or I would take a shot at singing what was in my head. Though over all, their contributions to the record are entirely their own vision and their own power.” The follow-up to 2014’s critically lauded Rooms With Walls And Windows, this release offers a bigger picture through a wider exploration of instruments and atmospherics, revealing an artist who has grown in confidence over time. Whether witnessing the Pacific Northwest for the first time (“Melting Grid”), the morning sky in the mountains of Boulder (“Natural Blue”), or a journey fragrant with rose water or reading Frank O’Hara aloud from the passenger seat during a drive through the Utah desert into the rainforest of Washington State (“The Sea As It Glides”), Not Even Happiness is Byrne’s beguiling ode to the fringes of life.
T.S.O.L./Trigger Complex Limited clear colored vinyl LP pressing includes digital download. You can count the number of bands who’ve stayed together for almost 40 years on two hands, and you can use just one hand to count those who’ve consistently released quality material for the duration of those almost four decades. T.S.O.L. enter that esteemed category, and in keeping with their D.I.Y. roots, they’ve done it without a major label, corporate radio, or MTV. T.S.O.L. are nothing short of a legacy, and with their new release, The Trigger Complex they’re showing just why they’ve become one of the most respected and appreciated punk bands of all time. Their first studio offering since 2009, The Trigger Complex is easily the band’s strongest, most anthemic material to date.
Soul Scratch/Pushing Fire
From the first few notes, this record grabs you. It’s raw soul and funk music crafted to perfection. Wailing vocals, soaring horns, and a super tight rhythm section. With a dirty production style, Soul Scratch serves up something that’s familiar, fresh, and never more relevant.
And the rest…
