Frank Zappa & Mothers of Invention/Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Vinyl LP repressing. Weasels Ripped My Flesh is the tenth studio album by the Mothers of Invention, released in 1970. It is the second posthumous Mothers album released after the band disbanded in 1969, preceded by Burnt Weeny Sandwich. In contrast to it’s predecessor, which predominately focused on studio recordings of tightly arranged compositions, Weasels Ripped My Flesh largely consists of live recordings and features more improvisation. Whereas all but one of the pieces on Burnt Weeny Sandwich have a more planned feel captured by quality studio equipment, five tracks from Weasels Ripped My Flesh capture the Mothers on stage, where they employ frenetic and chaotic improvisation characteristic of avant-garde jazz and free jazz. This is particularly evident on “Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue,” a tribute to the multi-instrumentalist, cited as a musical influence in the liner notes to the band’s Freak Out! Album, who died in 1964. The album also documents the brief tenure of Lowell George (guitar and vocals), who went on to found the country-rock band Little Feat with Mothers bassist Roy Estrada. On “Didja Get Any Onya”, George affects a German accent to relate a story of being a small boy in Germany and seeing “a lot of people stand around on the corners asking questions, ‘Why are you standing on the corner, acting the way you act, looking the way you look, why do you look that way?'”

Togo Soul 70:Selected Rare Togolese
Double LP version. Gatefold jacket with inner sleeves. Hot Casa present Togo Soul 70: Selected Rare Togolese Recordings From 1971 To 1981. A treasure-trove of rare and unusual recordings, mostly recorded in Lomé during the ’70s – a fusion of traditional voodoo chants, raw soul and Afro jazz. Finding these tracks and their rights holders hasn’t become any easier even after few trips all over this west African country bordered by Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso. With Togo Soul 70, Hot Casa have selected 13 tracks, a snapshot of hundreds of rare and often forgotten tapes from the most prolific, professional and exciting phase of the country’s recording history, including international stars like Bella Bellow (who even performed at Maracana Stadium in Brazil), or Roger Damawuzan, referred to as the James Brown from Lomé, and forgotten tapes and brilliant songs in the Mina, Kabyié and Fon languages. Many of the tracks featured here are peppered with innovation and experimentation, highlighting how diverse the music scene in Togo was at the time, even if the political context influenced their creation. A must have for all music lovers. This selection was used as the soundtrack for the documentary Togo Soul 70, directed by Liz Gomis and DJ Julien Lebrun. Laura Nyro/Eli and The Thirteenth Confession
Limited vinyl LP repressing of this classic 1968 album from the late singer/songwriter. Laura was just 20 when she recorded this remarkable LP. Nyro soared to an artistic high point (though, inexplicably, she barely charted) with her second album, originally issued in March of 1968. Here we have her exquisitely arranged recordings of “Stoned Soul Picnic” and “Sweet Blindness” (both covered by 5th Dimentsion) and of “Eli’s Comin'” (covered by Three Dog Night) plus “Poverty Train,” “Lonely Women,” “Timer” and more. The album’s themes are of passion, love, romance, death, and drugs, and the songs are delivered in Nyro’s distinctive brash neo-operatic vocals. Musically, it is a multi-layered and opulent work, including multi-tracked vocals, jazz instrumentation and strings. The album’s loose genre is pop, but it also incorporates elements of jazz, opera, soul, gospel, and rock.
Laura Nyro/New York Tendaberry
Limited vinyl LP repressing of this classic 1969 album from the late singer/songwriter. On New York Tendaberry, Laura’s piano and voice roam free amid the stripped-down pleasures on her third album, her biggest hit (#32 pop). Intimate, melancholy and darkly shaded, this LP is still the most transfixing Laura Nyro moment for countless worshippers across the globe: “You Don’t Love Me When I Cry,” “Save the Country,” “Time and Love,” “Captain Saint Lucifer,” “Captain for Dark Mornings,” “Mercy on Broadway,” the title track and more. New York Tendaberry is strongly influenced by Nyro’s hometown, New York City. Nyro sings of lovers and romances in a notably darker tone than on her previous album Eli And The Thirteenth Confession. Musically, New York Tendaberry is far more intimate than any other Nyro album. The lack of multi-layered instrumentation and pop hooks is a departure from Eli. The album is built around her voice and piano. The use of strings and classical instrumentation is also notable. Nyro guided co-producer and engineer Roy Halee using color metaphors. She could not understand musical notation, and used other analogies to communicate what she wanted.
John Cage & David Tudor/San Francisco Museum of Art January 16, 1965
Modern Silence present a live recording, originally broadcast by KPFA Radio from the sculpture court of the San Francisco Museum of Art on January 16, 1965. Coinciding with the 39th birthday of fellow pianist and longtime associate David Tudor, this historic concert with John Cage opens with a duet for cymbal with contact microphones agitated by a wide gamut of objects, and concludes with Variations IV in which loudspeakers outside the performance space interacted with speakers next to the audience. Includes a performance of Christian Wolff’s For 1, 2 or 3 People. First vinyl release of this historic performance of minimalist music.
Nouvelle Vague/I Could Be Happy
Vinyl LP pressing. 2016 release from the French bossa nova band. I Could Be Happy is Nouvelle Vague’s fifth studio album. Like their eponymous first album, it is a collection of bossa nova cover versions of 1980s new wave tracks, plus four original compositions. This is the band’s first album with original compositions. Since 2011, Nouvelle Vague had stopped recording, focusing on an innovative live show created in collaboration with the mythical Jean-Charles de Castelbajac (Ceremony and Dawn of innocence,) and branching out into different projects. The time seems right to write a new chapter in the Nouvelle Vague saga: with I Could Be Happy and live show, the band and it’s coterie of female vocalists continue their time travels with a renewed alegria. Nouvelle vague by Nouvelle Vague and Some Friends is thus more of a nexus of forthcoming projects: a new album comprised of punk and post punk standards imbued with the inimitable Nouvelle Vague touch, and, for the first time, a bevy of surprising Collin/Libaux which prove that the two producers are more than prodigious arrangers. This album is also the opportunity to gather again the pioneer singers of Nouvelle Vague: Élodie Frégé, Mélanie Pain, Liset Alea, Nadeah and to find other guests as Camille or Clara Luciani.
Steve Reich & Terry Riley/Six Pianos Keyboard Study 1
Vinyl LP pressing, includes digital download. After the widely noticed performance at the “Acht Brücken Festival 2016” at Cologne’s Philharmonic Hall, Gregor Schwellenbach, Hauschka, Erol Sarp (of Grandbrothers), Daniel Brandt and Paul Frick (both of Brandt Brauer Frick) and John Kameel Farah release their interpretation of Steve Reich’s “Six Pianos” as a studio recording via FILM. The re-recording of this piece is an interpretation of Reich’s composition but still far more than just that – it is a modern approach to his idea behind it. The basic idea came up at the beginning of the ’70s at the Baldwin Piano & Organ Company in New York. During a rehearsal phase, which Steve Reich spent in this very piano store, the idea emerged of writing a composition for all the grand pianos available to him at the company. By the time of the finished piece, the actual number of pianos had settled down to six, where “Six Pianos” developed in 1973. On the occasion of his 80th birthday, the six pianists declare their love to Steve Reich with this release. Shaped by electronic club music as well as their classical education, they form “Six Pianos” in dignified modernity and top it off with today’s sound aesthetics and technical recording possibilities. Presented here is not the recording from the Kölner Philharmonie (Cologne Philharmonics), but the ensemble playing six different grand pianos in six different locations throughout Germany. Each pianist performed his part on his piano using his typical studio equipment and passed the recording over to the next one. Thus the six characteristic and individual timbres of the performers overlay to create the overall picture – “Six Pianos” the way it should be looked at in 2016. Jan Brauer mixed “Six Pianos” in the studio while Lukas Vogel provided delays for the “Keyboard Study #1”. “Keyboard Study #1” by Terry Riley is a worthy companion for Reich’s composition. The piece is kind of a building set of ever lengthening, repetitive patterns played against each other with the right and left hand displaced. The composition proposes various possible combinations for the performer to choose from and repeat at will. And what the performers have chosen proves Gregor Schwellenbach’s assumption: “Terry Riley’s and Steve Reich’s music are open doors for pianists socialized by pop music and their audience.”
Adrian Young & Ali Shaheed Muhammad/Luke Cage OST
Mondo is excited to unveil the soundtrack for Marvel’s Luke Cage, the Netflix original series, with collectible artwork of the bulletproof hero by Matthew Woodson. Composers Adrian Younge (Something About April) and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) have combined forces to produce one of the best scores of 2016 featuring an inspired, genre-bending blend of orchestral score and 90’s hip-hop beats, filtered through the sonic lens of the works of Ennio Morricone. It’s no surprise that the score hovers in the same terrain of the Spaghetti Westerns soundtracks of Morricone – the narrative of Luke Cage plays out like a modern Western, only set in Harlem. Muhammad and Younge have meticulously crafted one of the most unique sonic landscapes in the history of television. “We sought to create a score that reflects the world of Luke Cage. We see this world as a place where classic cinema meets classic Hip Hop,” said composers Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Adrian Younge.

The album “Kontraktion” is the result of two long sessions that have been recorded on tapes by Conrad Schnitzler and Siegmar Fricke in Con’s former studio Leberstrasse in Berlin. The five soundscapes (produced in November 1986 and July 1987 with EMS-Synthi A, KORG MS 10+20, delays) contain all the machinistic energy and infernal industrial sound-eruptions similar to Conrad’s first three albums “Schwarz”, “Rot” and Blau” and to the rumbling train-wheel-rhythms of “Zug” (from the CON-album 1978). In addition “Kontraktion” carries the spirit of the first album by Cluster (released on Philips in 1971) due to the imposing bruitiste elements of uneasy sci-fi atmospheres. In 2014 the long sessions on tape have been edited, restructured and recombined by Siegmar Fricke at Pharmakustik-studio Germany and have now become a powerful milestone…30 years after they have been recorded.
