Vinyl LP pressing. Digitally remastered edition. The Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 is the Grammy Award winning debut from The Traveling Wilburys (George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison) featuring the worldwide hits “Handle With Care” and “End Of The Line”. The Traveling Wilburys (sometimes shortened to the Wilburys) were a British-American supergroup that recorded two albums, the first in 1988 and the second in 1990, though Orbison died before the second was recorded. George Harrison first mentioned the Traveling Wilburys during a radio interview with Bob Coburn on the Rockline radio station in February 1988. When asked what he planned to do as a follow-up for his Cloud Nine album, Harrison replied: “What I’d really like to do next is… to do an album with me and some of my mates… a few tunes, you know. Maybe the Traveling Wilburys… it’s this new group I got: it’s called the Traveling Wilburys, I’d like to do an album with them and later we can all do our own albums again.” “Wilbury” was a slang term first used by Harrison during the recording of Cloud Nine with Jeff Lynne. Referring to recording errors created by some faulty equipment, Harrison jokingly remarked to Lynne, “We’ll bury ’em in the mix”. Thereafter, they used the term for any small error in performance and the term was used again when the group were together. Harrison suggested “The Trembling Wilburys” as the group’s name; instead, Lynne suggested “Traveling”, with which the group agreed.
Traveling Wilburys – “The Traveling Wilburys, Volume 3” With Roy Orbison’s unexpected passing shortly after their debut, the Wilburys would continue as a foursome and release their second album, whimsically entitled The Traveling Wilburys, Vol. 3 featuring the singles “Inside Out”, “She’s My Baby” and “Wilbury Twist”.
Jenny Hval’s conceptual takes on collective and individual gender identities and sociopolitical constructs landed Apocalypse, girl on dozens of year end lists and compelled writers everywhere to grapple with the age-old, yet previously unspoken, question: What is Soft Dick Rock? After touring for a year and earning her second Nordic Prize nomination, as any perfectionist would, Hval immediately went back into the studio to continue her work with acumen noise producer Lasse Marhaug, with whom she co-produces here on Blood Bitch. Her new effort is in many respects a complete 180° from her last in subject matter, execution and production. It is her most focused, but the lens is filtered through a gaze which the viewer least expects.

Wax Tailor aims to make you travel with his fifth studio album By Any Beats Necessary. “The album’s title reflects my determination to use all kinds of sounds and textures to get to something musical,” says JC Le Saout. “The word ‘Beat’ also draws a line towards the Beat Gen- eration, Kerouac’s famous novel On The Road, and the quest for a better place. And so, in this time when each of us needs a little escape, I conceptualized this album as the soundtrack to a better elsewhere”. This new take on the western frontier leads us on a fabled road where blues, psychedelic rock, soul, funk and hip-hop collide. Joining him on this ride are guests such as Ghostface Killah from the Wu Tang Clan, R.A. The Rugged Man, who crosses mics with up and comers A-F-R-O & Token, in a showdown for the ages. This is among our favorite Tom Ze albums. Richard Gehr who writes so much better then we had this to say about Tom: You don’t need to be a polymath to love Tom Zé’s’s music, but it helps. A seminal figure of the early-’70s Tropicalismo movement in Brazil that launched the careers of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil and Os Mutantes, among others, Zé’s is a card-carrying cultural cannibal inspired equally by both ideas and sounds. “I don’t make art,” he has said. “I make spoken or sung journalism.” By way of explaining his unique outsider status in Brazilian popular music for National Public Radio, Zé recalled how he “discovered at a young age that I was horrible composer, a horrible instrumentalist, and a horrible singer.” Like Lee Perry, George Clinton, Kip Hanrahan and Hal Willner, Zé is a genre unto himself, an uncompromising ringmaster with a talent for marshaling mighty forces to manifest his idiosyncratic musical visions. Born Antonio José Santana Martins in the outback village of Irara, Bahia, in 1936, Tom Zé was a semipopular singer-songwriter from his eponymous debut album in 1968 through the ’70s. By the end of the ’80s, however, a discouraged Zé was on the verge of abandoning music completely. In fact, he was on the verge of assuming management of a gas station with his wife when he learned that David Byrne wanted to meet him. Drawn to it’s barbed-wire cover illustration, Byrne had picked up a copy of Zé’s 1975 album Estudando o Samba (Studying Samba) while visiting Brazil, and wanted to meet it’s maker. The following Luaka Bop releases of Tom’s music revitalized his career, nowhere more so then in Brazil. Tom’s third Luaka Bop album, Com Defeito de Fabricao (Fabrication Defect), is Zé’s most fully realized so far. It consists of fourteen “defects,” tracks Zé’s composed through his “esthetics of plagiarism,” or arrasto, which he defined as “‘wilding’ with a purpose, i.e. robbery.” Zé’s denounces cynical first-world purveyors of commercialized crap to the third-world masses while celebrating said masses’ supposed imperfections: religious hypocrisy, curiosity, stupidity, raging youthful hormones and a love of dance.

The layering of moody electronic elements and the organic instrumentation of strings and harmonies allowed the band to play to their strengths in a way they never have before.
Vinyl LP pressing. 2016 solo release from the Bright Eyes frontman. This past winter, Conor Oberst found himself hibernating in his hometown of Omaha after living in New York City for more than a decade. He emerged with the unexpectedly raw, unadorned solo album Ruminations. Oberst went to ARC, the studio he built with his Bright Eyes bandmate and longtime friend Mike Mogis, to record that music. With the help of engineer Ben Brodin, he recorded all the songs in the span of 48 hours. The results are almost sketch-like in their sparseness, and they ultimately became the songs that comprise Ruminations. These tracks do not have the multi-layered instrumentation of the most recent Bright Eyes and solo albums: This is Oberst alone with his guitar, piano, and harmonica; the songs connect with some of the rough magic and anxious poetry that first brought him to the attention of the world, while their lyrical complexity and concerns make it obvious they could only have been written in the present.

On Two Door Cinema Club’s third album, Gameshow, the band has challenged themselves to indulge a wide and varied range of styles and influences stretching way beyond the traditional Two Door sound to take in Prince, Madonna, McCartney, Chic, Krautrock, neo soul and modernist pop, Gameshow, the result, is by far their most enthralling and danceable record yet, albeit one full of the uncertainties of finding yourself and your place in the world. How do the band feel about embracing bigger pop elements? “I feel really good about it,” Alex says. “We’re not embracing the pop that s going on right now in a melodic sense or even structurally. Sonically we went the other way and started to experiment a lot more with things like using samples and more electronics. The two biggest inspirations on this record were Bowie and Prince, for me at least. Both total pioneers who did whatever they wanted to do. They really straddled that line between insane pop and total avant garde craziness.”
The rock we need meets the rock we deserve, with popular music to keep spirits(and bias) high for the coming stretch of unexplored darkness wasteland ahead.
